Katzenmoyer a no-show at Patriots minicamp

FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) -- Andy Katzenmoyer missed Thursday's start of the New England Patriots minicamp, raising concerns that he may not return after missing all of last season following neck problems.

``There's nothing new to report on Andy. It's the way it's been all year,'' coach Bill Belichick said in shedding little light on the linebacker's status.

Asked if Katzenmoyer would be waived or might retire, Belichick said, ``He's wherever he's been for the last three months, wherever that is.''

He said he hadn't talked to Katzenmoyer during that time and added, ``when we have something to say about it, we'll say something about it. In the meantime, there's nothing really new to say.''

The Patriots took Katzenmoyer out of Ohio State with their second pick in the first round, the 28th overall, in the 1999 draft. He started 14 of the 24 games he played in his first two seasons.

But he damaged a disc in his neck during a game against Buffalo as a rookie and finally stopped playing after the eighth game in 2000.

He had surgery in November 2000 and again last summer after becoming concerned about a feeling in his neck he had the first time he was hit in training camp July 26.

``I'm pretty confident about this,'' Katzenmoyer said at the time. ``I can't wait. The sooner the better, so I can begin getting ready for next year.''

Katzenmoyer left training camp without permission for two days when he felt pain in his neck. He later said he had ``panicked'' and that he never contemplated retirement.

Katzenmoyer did not attend the team's conditioning program that began April 1. The three-day minicamp ends Saturday, one day before the Patriots receive their rings as Super Bowl champions.
