It sounds like you need to reinstall your original operating system from the restore disks that came with your machine.

Since you already lost your data you have nothing to back up so you will just be putting a new, clean install of your operating system.

That should you get everything back to normal for you.

"Sort of" is such a harmless thing to say. "Sort of". It's just a filler. "Sort of" - It doesn't really mean anything. But after certain things, "sort of" means everything. Like after "I love you" or "You're going to live" or "It's a boy".
