Streeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch!
Rev,
<< I have not read a persuasive argument why Nokia would behave differently than Panasonic, Apple, Samsung or LG who all first bought 2G chips from Infineon and then bought 3G chips. >>
How many of the above design their own baseband and related modem technology for all evolving 3GPP access technologies as Nokia does (and license that technology to others)? The answer is NONE! Panasonic is now a non-player outside of Japan and doesn't use Infineon as even a secondary 3GSM supplier (perhaps tertiary). Samsung continued with Infineon after Infineon acquired their GSM supplier Agere through LSI, and now are 2nd sourcing through Broadcom for EDGE/WEDGE/HEDGE. LG is primarily sourced by Qualcomm as is Samsung for 3GSM and volume of both from Infineon (and Panasonic) doesn't register on any Richter scale. Apple, of course, is single sourced by Infineon, but their 2.5G/3GSM volume is so low they have a problem considering and justifying a 2nd source. The most logical 2nd source, however, would be Qualcomm, if they elect to enter the CDMA2000 market.
You might want to pay more attention to what is actually happening in the industry and why in the future than you have in the past.
You of course, took a Thompson-Reuters article and created a self-serving fantasy out of it. Persuasive? No. Ridiculous? Yes.
Nice win from Nokia, for Infineon. Does InterDigital benefit? I don't see how.
Cheers,
