In my gun training class they taught that if the bad guy is within 20 feet(let alone sitting at the same table) you are pretty much in for some hand to hand combat...

I wouldn't take that chance if someone threatened my life in the past. Especially if I wasn't allowed to carry any heat. It's just not worth it. You only get to be wrong once about a threat like that.
