10 bagger, I like your insightful comments but I think the latest PR informs us of a very positive move (literally).
Years ago I worked for a radio station as a salesman and later sales manager in the 18th largest radio market. The company's offices were located out in a former mining pit and waste disposal area and consisted of a beat-up trailer and a block building that housed electronic equipment. Worse, there was a large mining pit that was filled with a foul-looking liquid. And the water was undrinkable. Couldn't even make coffee with it.
Every other station in the market had nice offices and sales types could (would) bring clients in to meet the DJs and management and perhaps get a cuppa and confidence in their advertising buy. As a salesman I wouldn't take anyone to the trailer and neither would the other guys for two reasons: first you didn't want to show them your digs, and second, you wouldn't want them to confirm the snickering rumors about how we actually lived.
But ownership was local, the property was paid off and they felt that enough money was coming in to make them a comfortable living.
The upshot is another radio company with a history of improving radio stations saw the potential of the 50KW signal, made a cash offer to the owners they couldn't refuse, changed format, moved us to fine, but fine-looking third-story offices in town and in six months we were the number one station in the market.
OK, OK, the format change had a lot to do with our success, but ultmately the positive state of mind and confidence we were able to give our management, salespersons, DJs and staff now housed in welcoming offices had a lot to do with how we did our business. And how you do business is an important part of doing business.
Have a great weekend.
