Tuesday 24 February 2009
US provider of microcontrollers for smart card applications Atmel and French contactless technology provider TazTag have teamed up to market contactless services for storing and protecting personal data.
As a first step in their collaboration, TazTag is integrating the Atmel AT98SC016CU security chip in its TazCard NFC electronic wallet. The chip has security functions that provide counter-measures against hacking, duplicating (cloning), counterfeiting, data/IP stealing and phishing for embedded system applications. The chip incorporates security features embedded in smart cards products for banking, ID and pay-TV.
The TazCard is a new multi-purpose NFC device in slim credit card format (only 6 mm in thickness). The device can transport, save, exchange and compute personal data, providing an interface via kiosks’ touch screen. User privacy can be exchanged only as a result of users’ decisions and data security is guaranteed with biometric authentication via an embedded fingerprint sensor.
The card can function using various communication interfaces, namely NFC, USB and ZigBee and it can be employed in three modes, namely reader/writer, card emulation and peer-to-peer. In the first mode, the card can read and alter data stored in NFC compliant passive transponders and after being switched into the second mode it can act as a smart card (ISO 14443). In the peer-to-peer mode, two Tazcards can establish a bidirectional connection to exchange contacts, ZigBee pairing information or any data.
The TazCard is used for applications such as payments, access control, ticketing and couponing. If required, a complete Java Software Development Kit also allows the addition of further customised applications.
