80 per cent of South Ossetia's residents hold Russian passports. South Ossetia has also appealed to Moscow to let the republic be integrated into the Russian Federation. So far their integration has been denied by Duma or Putin, same thing considering the amount of control Put has.

One reason I understand is that for Moscow to embrace South Ossetia’s separatism in any but a clandestine way would be seen by the world as hypocritical when considering Chechnya who dearly wants to break away but Moscow says nyet.

Interesting predicament.
