Open any folder on your computer and go to Tools/Folder Options/File Types Tab and find and change the type of file you're trying to restore (For instance...bmp) and then hit the change button and pick the application (Windows Fax and Image Viewer) you want to open the type of file or if the association has been stolen hit the restore button.
