It is good you are trying to help. Staying in a familiar environment as long as possible is probably good for them.

You might want to discretely inquire if they carry identification, as when dementia gets really bad, people can get completely lost and wander away from their neighborhood. Having id on them can help the police get them back where they belong. Knowing how to contact their family helps too.
