Off the top of my head.

1) Russian problems with Islam are not necessarily problems with Iran. The Shi'ites in Iran were actively fighting the Taliban.

2) Just as the USA aided and abetted the Islamic movement in Afghanistan so the Russians may perceive a real benefit in drawing the US further into war.

3) Economics. Markets etc. Ports. (there is an old one)
