Yes, our store also had wooden floors. My only neg memory was inventory time...ever count thousands of lose pens/pencils? Our candy dept was in front of the store and when you came through the (non) mechanical doors, the sweet smell hit you. We had a few strange regular customers, which were entertaining - especially to 16yr olds.
I don't recall the store ever being robbed. Eventually I was "promoted" to work in the office, a semi-walled off section on the floor. After collecting/counting cash from the cash registers and accompanied by the stock boy, I carried the cash deposit to a bank across the street - imagine two 16yr olds with the store's cash from probaby the busiest day of the week and nobody on the street ever disturbed us. Surely different times!

When began working in NYC, I went into Woolworth's 5 & 10 on 34th Street and was amazed at how big it was. Ours was a small store on a main street - a woman's shop to our left, a bakery to our right.
