There are lots of differences between this market downturn and that of the great depression. Two of the most significant is that back then average Americans didn't invest in the market but today, most people are invested one way or the other. (401k, pension funds, IRAs, etc)

The other is that during the depression, unemployment was 25% and now it is 6%. If unemployment goes to 10% or more then we are in Big trouble.
