I think you were one of the ones who always said the playoffs are all about the pitching. Last I knew the bullpen was part of the pitching staff.
Although I agree with you 100%, I believe good starting Pitching is more important, these guys pitch 6 or 7 innings, while your bullpen pitches 2-3 innings. So their is no doubt what is more important in my mind. You don't need a great bullpen to win, if you can do all other 3 right (Defense, Hit, and good starting Pitching), the problem is these guys aren't below average they are bad at historically bad levels. Mets are all of the above.
1) A great Hitting team
2) Good Starting Pitching
3) One of the best defensive teams in baseball
4) Well Managed.
5) They can steal bases.
They basically do everything, but their bullpen Just ain't bad, if it was bad they wouldn't be in this condition, these guys are bad on historic levels. This team if they even had an average bullpen, would easily win a world series. Remember the starting staff is also missing John Maine, and they are Missing Billy Wagner, those are two major injuries that have done serious damage. Just my opinion.
Having said that Santana pitches tonight, they are going to win. And they will be fine and win the wildcard. I will say this if the Mets do not win tonight I will be very concerned tomorrow. Having said that I don't see that happening as I see a 9-2 Mets Victory tonight. All the Mets Need to do is make the Playoffs, and once you get in there anyone has a chance to win. I believe the Mets will have as good of shot as anyone because very few teams have their ability to Match Great Defense, Starting Pitching, and Great Hitting combined. Having said that if they don't make the playoffs I will be proven wrong again and depressed. Don't see that happening though, although I was wrong on the Phillies, they are better then I thought. Just my opinion.
