Holy shite, you're right:

Figure 1, Bar Charts: Sources of US Energy

Crude Oil: 40%

Nat. Gas: 25%

Coal: 23%

Renewable: 12%
Figure 2, Bar Charts: Oil Consumption by Use

Personal Vehicles: 33.0%

Trucking: 20.0%

Petrochemicals: 11.5%

Industrial Heat: 8.3%

Air Transportation: 7.6%

Heat and Power: 7.3%

Water Transport: 2.7

Other: 8.1%

These are circa 1998 figures, from http://www.padrak.com/ine/NEN_5_11_5.html

Just a random google. No time for a more careful search. I hate it when I'm wrong, but happy to find out. =)

Now I'm really serious that we have got to stop burning this stuff - it's too valuable!!!!

I'm gonna start my own alternative energy company - anybody want to kick in some cash? I figure I'll get 20 people or so, some lab space, some supplies for at least five years; I'm guessing $200MM should be enough.

What do you say, Zeev? Want to be the director of the Tantal Institute?
