I don't think that petrochemicals consume nearly as much of the crude production as you cite, I would be surprised if it is even 20%. But I agree that is really the only "rational" used of crude oil. By the way, there a serious movement "away" from traditional hydrocarbon based polymers to carbohydrate type polymers which can be harvested) because the latter are biodegradable. Of course, I have not seen yet the equivalent mechanical and thermal properties of aramides in poly carbohydrate type polymers, but who knows, in time, maybe?
