McCain adviser Charlie Black made news when he said a terror attack on America would help the GOP hold the presidency....
Who is Charlie Black, and why hasn't he been fired?
He is one of the fathers of today's GOP attack machine, a co-founder of a political action committee (NCPAC) in 1975 -- with sleazy operative Roger Stone and the late self-hating gay Republican Terry Dolan -- that raised money with deceptive direct mail advertising and spent it on Swiftboat-style TV ads smearing Democrats.
He's won some -- was an early backer of Jesse Helms -- and lost some -- Reagan fired him in 1980.
But Charlie Black always lands on his feet, which is why McCain needs Charlie more than Charlie needs McCain.
