mass murderer: Multiple homicides in a single event. I've never heard of a minimum number being applied. Examples would be the school shootings, several restaurant incidents and of course WTC.



serial killer: Multiple homicides in multiple events. May be spread over weeks, months or years, often with no apparent rhyme or reason. Not always involving sexual violation and/ or torture. In one very chilling description, Henry Lee Lucas details diverting his buddy Otis Thorpe from killing a drug dealer because they can be tied to the victim through their previous encounters. To help Otis deal with the rage Henry took him out on the highway where, while posing as a couple of guys with car trouble, Otis shot and killed the first Good Samaritan that came along.

sociopath/psychopath: I agree with the psych lit here as well. was looking for a more detailed comparison. Such as, is it possible for a sociopath to function within the law and standards acceptable to society? same for psychopath?
