Copper for home wiring will be around for a long, long time. However, fiberoptics for the local loop and to the house will replace the twisted pair as we go forward over the next 10 to 20 years. The USA is way behind Japan in this regard. How fast the USA moves to FTTH depends upon how much effort and support the federal government decides to allocate to that area.
