With very slight modification to cars, including better access and a visible or RF guidance method, a robotic refueling system could be much more efficient and cheaper. Even some kind of marking around/on the gas cap might let the system reliably not scratch the car.
Two challenges I see to robotic refueling are reliability and economics. Some states don't even allow you to lock the gas on because of reliability issues with auto shutoff. And the per-use cost has to be less than the pain of filling yourself, which seems low.
