"Shell’s specific order calls for Oceaneering subsidiary Multiflex to supply hybrid subsea pump and steel tube production control umbilicals totaling approximately 50 km (31 mi) in length. The umbilicals will be used for the ten well, subsea development of the Ostra, Abalone, and Argonauta fields in water depths ranging from 4,900 to 6,500 ft within BC-10 in the Campos Basin. Shell reports that this will be the first full field development based on subsea oil and gas separation and pumping.
Rob von Tungeln, Subsea Engineer for Shell E&P, and Keith Driver, Project Manager for Oceaneering Multiflex, recently described the umbilical requirements in more detail. “Oceaneering Multiflex is contracted to supply umbilicals that incorporate steel tubing, low voltage elements and high voltage power elements, as well as fiber optics, all in one bundled product,” said von Tungeln. “What really makes this new is the application, for an ultradeepwater project.”
Shell and Oceaneering Multiflex are still in the design phase of the umbilical, but both companies have a clear idea of what the final product will look like. According to Driver, “This particular contract calls for both dynamic and static umbilicals. For the three dynamic umbilicals, two of them will be about 11 km long and one will be about 9.6 km long.” The static umbilicals will be of two lengths, 2.4 km and 16.4 km.
“The cross-sectional diameters of the dynamic umbilicals are just under 9 in.,” said Driver. “There will be two passes-an inner pass and an outer pass-per umbilical.” The dynamic umbilicals will be packed with cables and tubes for power and control. Said von Tungeln: “We plan to have up to 16 super duplex steel tubes per umbilical, which will provide chemical and hydraulic service to the subsea trees.”
(so the 3 BSLatchers are for the 3 dynamic umbilicals. Whereas static umbilicals lay on the ocean floor)
