Petz: For sure, Intel will have an X99 within 2 years. Then what will they do?

My sense is that Intel will keep these ratings for successive generations of architecture. They could simply replace older architectures with the newer faster ones. That would take a lot of the emphasis off the uP GHz which is essentially what they want to do: sell added features, not GHz. Some questions everyone should ask themselves is, "Who has more added features to sell, Intel or AMD? What does it take to add these features, silicon capability? Who is more cabable of innovation that will generate new features? Who can more effectively market those features?"

Petz: Well, one thing I noticed is that Intel doesn't have a digit to indicate 64-bit capability. I guess they don't need it for a long time.

No need. Again, as above, simply replace 32 only with 32/64. "Try the new Intel 760, now with added 64 bit capability!" There never was a question that 64 bits would move into the architectures, only when. Also, 64 bits was always, will always be free, no price premium.

Petz: The model numbers for Opteron make sense because server performance depends on a lot more than CPU GHz. The people spending $5000 on a server will compare performance of models in their price range.

Also, the people buying servers know what they are doing. It doesn't matter if servers have a naming scheme or not. When servers come to the homeowner's den, that may be another story, probably not for quite a while.

Petz: Consumers are not so sophisticated. My prediction is that they and retailers will ignore the model numbers and continue to focus on MHz and its proxy, QS ratings.

I think not. Once introduced we'll all be surprised at how convenient and popular this will be. The consumer is quite sophisticated. Why do you think all that money is spent on advertising? Don't EVER underestimate the consumer! Your comment is to assume that average Joe out there is not surfing the internet before he buys! Ridiculous!
