To keep the last two digits meaningful is an impossible task. How much faster is a 330 vs a 525?

The same as a 560 vs. a 350?

Well, maybe.

For sure, Intel will have an X99 within 2 years. Then what will they do?

Well, one thing I noticed is that Intel doesn't have a digit to indicate 64-bit capability. I guess they don't need it for a long time.

The model numbers for Opteron make sense because server performance depends on a lot more than CPU GHz. The people spending $5000 on a server will compare performance of models in their price range.

Consumers are not so sophisticated. My prediction is that they and retailers will ignore the model numbers and continue to focus on MHz and its proxy, QS ratings.
