I find this interesting. My father, who passed away a while ago, spent his life working in the natural gas industry.
His first post was working for a municipality in Virginia. They manufactured the natural gas used by the town from coal, then piped (distributed) the gas to the users. I guess this was back in the late 30's/early 40's. Must have been a pretty small-scale operation by today's standards. I doubt they had more than 8,000-10,000 customers (residential & commercial combined).
