Mitchell Steroids Report to Name 11 Free Agents, Globe Says

By Mason Levinson

Nov. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Eleven Major League Baseball free agents will be named in former U.S. Senator George Mitchell's report on the use of performance-enhancing drugs in the sport, the Boston Globe reported on its Web site.

Agents who attended yesterday's union meeting in New York were told that all 11 players were notified by Commissioner Bud Selig's office, the Globe said, citing two unidentified agents who confirmed the story today.

Baseball spokesman Pat Courtney didn't immediately return a message for comment left on his mobile phone.

Baseball appointed Mitchell in March 2006 to examine previous use of steroids and other performance enhancers after reports linked the drugs to players including Barry Bonds, a free agent who has become the sport's home-run leader. Recently, players including Cleveland Indians pitcher Paul Byrd, St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel and Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Troy Glaus have been tied to receipt of shipments of human growth hormone.
