Dood!
You are right!
>>I've heard where the new Max OS X is based on the Unix code base. If true in structure as it sounds, then that means that Mac OS X is just another X-Windows platform like KDE, Gnome, etc.<<
I researched it for you last night after you went to sleep. Mac OS X uses a flavor of Unix called Darwin. It's Apple's open source project and is freely downloadable. It is the core components (or foundation) like you were talking about.
The Mac OS X is another layer (ie X-Window) that goes on top of the core Unix code. Similar to KDE/Gnome for Linux.
Darwin is made up of FreeBSD and Mach 3.0 code. I suggest you go and read more about it. Looks solid.
What is more interesting is this: If you look closely at the site, you'll see there is a Darwin version for the INTEL/WINDOWS-BASED computer. Now, why would Apple port the core operating code for it's new OS to Intel based machines? I'd bet it has something to do with Apple planning to offer software for the Intel-based machines in the future.
I think that is what Apple needs to do. Get off their high horse about selling proprietary equpiment and grab the OS market like MS has. Maybe this is the beginning. I hope so. Their technology has always been very innovative.
