Ruminant animals have the ability to digest hay and crop wastes and hence give beef producers the option of reducing grain in rations. Monogastric animals like pigs cannot digest cellulosic material. There are some producers here in Australia who have their cattle on wheat stubble and urea. A cheap ration with a poor conversion rate but allows them to buy time while this current lull blows over and move into caretaker mode. You only have to look at how pork prices have tanked in relation to feeder cattle prices. And yes I am talking about commodity prices. Good luck.
