We really have two brains connected with super highways of white matter. If you lose one hemisphere due to stroke or injury you can train the half you have left to do all functions. When I first started out as a college professor one of my colleagues had a stroke on the golf course. He was in a coma for months and nurses and doctors were saying in front of him that it would be best if he would just die. He heard all the talk but could not respond. After a lot of therapy and an extreme will to live he actually came back to teach classes with half a brain. He fit right in because most of the professors are lefties now anyway. True story.
