Prescott already had a long mode with both native and compatibility implemented exactly like AMD64? It already had the same number of GPRs? They added the new protection checks?
I find it hard to believe they didn't have to make some hardware changes, or that they didn't use AMD64 as a guide from the start and just named some instructions differently to be incompatible. There were many little details related to hardware that could have been done differently and would have been if they took their own path.
