Population growth, urbanization, and income growth in developing countries are fuelling a massive global increase in demand for beef.

Each year Australia produces about 2 million tonnes of beef with Queensland accounting for nearly 49%, New South Wales 22%, Victoria 18% of that production. Australia has 2.6% of the world’s cattle inventory, but produces 3.9% of the world’s beef supply with an annual gross value of approximately $4.8 billion.

Australia is the largest beef exporter in the world. In 2000 Australia exported 66% of its total beef production and the value of total beef exports is approximately $3.5 million. In the year to December 2000 over 900,000 tonnes of Australian beef meat was exported.

Japan and the United States are the largest market for Australian beef but the industry also exports to Canada, South Korea, Taiwan, South-East Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
