You obviously are unaware of the manufacturing process employed worldwide by the vast majority of multi-national companies often referred to as a "make or buy" option on individual components of an end product. That's where the subcontractors enter the picture. Auto manufacturers do this all the time, and I think you'll find that many of their components have been developed by the subs...often in concert with the manufacturer's R&D and engineering departments.
