Super Bowl Halftime Show Quite a Spectacle

I'm sitting here watching the Super Bowl halftime show, and remembering why I usually find something else to do at this point of the game. Please, can we just go back to the marching bands and twirlers?

At least I can change channels, which is more than the poor souls in Houston's Reliant Stadium can do. After all, the vast majority of folks who can afford tickets to sports' biggest spectacle are most likely not rap or hip hop fans. And the entire lineup of entertainers -- Janet Jackson, P. Diddy, Nelly, Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake -- appeal to those mostly under the age of 30 (or younger). So, if you're sitting in the loge or mezzanine (or anywhere else) right now, you're completely dumbfounded.

Every few minutes, a distant roll of applause will be audible, and the timing suggests those in attendance are doing "the wave" rather than responding to anything on stage.

But the music -- complete with the usual "keepin' it real" lyrics -- hasn't been the most disturbing element. No, that would be a toss-up between Kid Rock wearing an American Flag as a shirt -- with a hole in the middle of it for his head to stick through -- and Justin Timberlake's grope of Janet Jackson's breast at the end of their final number.

It's commonly said that "America's game" is now football, rather than baseball. Well, the decadent stupidity at halftime certainly mirrors the state of our popular culture more than "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" does.

The streaker who briefly interrupted the game before the second half kickoff (fortunately not shown by CBS, but referenced by the commentators) was probably a preview of a future Super Bowl halftime extravaganza.
