They are usually soldered with 60/40 or 40/60 silver solder. The connectors are gold plated. You can however, get memory chips without gold plated contacts and I seen even IBM reporting "this is better". Not where I live. As for musing about the Chinese currency, this was a longer term question, not in the next one or two years.
Thanks for explaining the lease rates. As for gold going up/US dollar dropping - in that scenario the price of gold may stay the same in other currencies. For instance, here in Canada, if the US dollar dropped and gold went up the same percentage, then my cost for gold bars might be the same. I think if gold takes a run, however, that is will increase quite a bit, at least in the short term.
