"Vivitrol is a dog."

I was curious, as it would seem alternatives to Antabuse should find a market. I e-mailed a friend I knew to be taking an "anti-alcohol" drug. These are his excerpted comments, for what they're worth:

"As far as I'm concered, Naltroxon works just fine. It kills the appetite for booze....

"I've become aware of a curious reality in the world of alchy-rehab and treatment, namely, the Orthodox AA Establishment doesn't LIKE pharma solutions to alcoholism.... They like it when people say they are 'powerless' in the face of alcohol....

"Some days into my rehab class, I said that my MD prescribed naltroxin and that it seemed to work wonders for me. My remark was met by total silence from the person running the meeting, which is remarkable since they have an MD-shrink on staff to help assess the inmates.

"Later on, one of the class members...was complaining about how hard it was to stay off booze and weed. I said, 'You should go see my doctor --- here's his name --- and see if he'll give you a script for Naltroxin.' The chief counselor told me to shut my mouth.... I was violating the orthodoxy.

"So, I don't know if the medical treatment of alcohol and drug addiction is on the fringes of alchy rehab or not, but from my limited view, it is....

"A lot of people make their living (albeit, not a good living) off of drug and alcohol 'counseling,' and I suppose that a quick and easy fix to either problem would cost some jobs. And, a lot of fine folks contribute heavily to the work of AA, and if some magic pill would reduce AA participation their standing as helpful heroes would diminish. ...if the pill kills the craving, there's not much left for the counselor to do with the motivated alchy...."

There is a very entrenched establishment in the drug treatment arena, particularly AA for alcohol. If these people are anti-drug, it will take a long time to change the model of drug treatment.

Of course, there could be other very good reasons that "Vivitrol is a dog." Care to elaborate or comment?
