Flipper, I believe the process for gathering stem cells is much the same as leukapheresis. When my donor was scheduled to donate, I was suffering with a cold, that meant that I could not receive the cells immediately. City of Hope had a choice of having the donor provide the cells, and cryogenically preserve them, or delay the donation. They choose to go ahead with the donation
The difference to me was the need for a Hickman catheter because the preservative used wouldn't flow through the smaller diameter of a regular catheter. I kept that catheter for a month or more after the stem cells and it was removed only when it became infected. My Dr. preferred having a catheter so if anything went wrong, I could be treated rapidly, I was thrilled to have it removed.
In all my treatments one of the biggest problems as a patient was the tubing being metered into the catheter, that clear plastic tubing is apparently rather expensive and it doesn't take long to deteriorate causing air bubbles to form in it. The pump, sensing the bubbles alarms and the nurses work the bubbles out of the tubing and it's good for a while longer. During the day it's not bad, but in the middle of the night when you're attempting to sleep, it's very annoying. It felt good each time the tubing was changed as it meant a night or two without alarms.
I don't know if the EDEN is using precisely the same type of tubes, if so, I hope that air bubbles don't become a problem as the fluids are moved with similar type of pumps. I'm sure they wouldn't want to replace the tubing during the process of making the vaccine.
It may be the fluid in the IV's the problem, but it seemed to happen all the time with the fluids I was being given. Bubbles might not be a problem in the EDEN, but they certainly are in an IV.
