The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) regularly suspends operations at slaughterhouses for "filthy" conditions (sanitation violations) and inhumane treatment, often prompted by undercover videos or inspector reports. Recent high-profile actions include the shutdown of a Nevada university facility for repeated inhumane handling and investigations into massive, unsanitary conditions at large-scale processors.

Recent USDA Slaughterhouse Closures & Suspensions

Boar's Head (2024-2025): Following a deadly listeria outbreak, USDA records documented extreme filth at a Virginia plant, including insects, mold, and meat residue on walls.

Wolf Pack Meats (Nevada, 2024): The USDA suspended operations at the University of Nevada, Reno’s facility multiple times (2019, 2022, 2023, 2024) for severe violations of the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, including failing to stun animals properly, leaving them conscious during slaughter.

Bartels Packing (Oregon, 2016): Suspended for failing to properly stun cattle.

Central Valley Meat (California, 2012): Closed temporarily following an undercover video showing inhumane treatment, such as shooting cows multiple times.

Rancho Feeding Corporation (California, 2014): Forced to close after illegally processing cancerous cattle, resulting in a recall of 8.7 million pounds of beef. $BYND
