In a cashless exercise, no personal cash comes out of Missling’s pocket or any other option holder’s pocket. The exercise price and taxes are covered by selling some of the shares created on exercise. The economic cost of granting and exercising those options is borne by the company and, in the end, its existing shareholders through dilution and option expense, not by the executive personally.
