My guess is that if enough people complain, they'll make a 2nd version with the choice to opt out of the "AI" part.

I hope so. But I would not count on that. As I understand it, MSFT users become quite attached to their operating systems. Does MSFT always make people BUY a new o/s? Or a computer with a new o/s? So now will they have to just accept the "new" MSFT 11, or buy something new?

I've been using Macs for so long--since 1999--that I forget how it works with MSFT. But even the people who work for them have been complaining forever. Back in 1996, I did a contract job for Corbis, which was new at the time. The project was a CD about Leonardo. And the Corbis/MSFT people were all excited, because they saw it as Wave of the Future stuff. Which it turned out not to be. People didn't start buying tons of CDs; they just downloaded stuff online. Anyhow, the people running that show frequently lamented that "the last good Win was Win 3." I agreed. But it had been definitively replaced by Win 95.

For what it's worth, I'm on Mac OS Sequoia, version 15.6.1. They release new versions now and then. They now have their AI stuff embedded in "Apple Intelligence & Siri":

Apple Intelligence* is the personal intelligence system built into macOS Sequoia. It combines the power of generative models with an understanding of your personal context to deliver intelligence that’s useful and relevant, all while protecting your privacy.

Note: Apple Intelligence is not available on all Mac models or in all languages or regions.** To access the most recent available features, make sure you’re using the latest version of macOS.

Turn on Apple Intelligence
If Apple Intelligence is off, you can turn it on. Choose Apple menu > System Settings, click Apple Intelligence & Siri , then do one of the following:

Click the button next to Apple Intelligence.

Click Turn on Apple Intelligence.

The option you see is based on the version of macOS you have and if you’ve previously set up Apple Intelligence.

I do not have mine turned on.

You can do all sorts of stuff. And have Siri do stuff. I've never used Siri, either. You can also make it use ChatGPT to write stories for you. Well, I guess for your kids. They don't seem to have their own LLM, and I've read that they're considered to be way behind. Perhaps they, as before, will in the end turn out to be way ahead.

Oh, you can make your own emojis. How useful.
