You really shouldn't base your faith on a terminology you seem to not understand.
Do you believe all trades (what few they are) are matched trades every day? Would you complain if it was impossible to sell shares?

AI Overview
Short interest represents the total number of shares sold short and not yet covered at a specific point in time, typically reported bi-monthly. Short volume, in contrast, is the total number of shares sold short on a given trading day. Think of short interest as a snapshot of outstanding short positions, while short volume shows the daily activity of new short sales.

Short Interest
What it is: The total number of shares sold short by investors that are still open and outstanding.
How it's reported: Brokerage firms report this data twice a month, around the middle and at the end of the month.
What it tells you: It provides a longer-term view of investor sentiment and the total market-wide bearish positioning in a stock.
Short Volume
What it is: The aggregate volume of short sales that occurred on a single trading day.
How it's reported: This data is typically updated daily or even intraday, offering real-time insights.
What it tells you: It indicates the short-term short-selling sentiment and activity in the market for a given stock.

Key Differences
Timeframe: Short interest is a cumulative snapshot over a bi-monthly period, while short volume is a daily measurement.
Purpose: Short interest shows established short positions, whereas short volume shows the flow of new short selling activity.
Reporting Frequency: Short interest is reported bi-monthly, while short volume is available on a daily basis.
