I used to teach at a high school. One of my students was a consistently getting As and Bs, then one month she just dropped off a cliff. B's and C's and it was just clearly not the same quality of work. At first I thought it was a case of early "senioritis" but I later learned that her father had died unexpectedly.

The next exam that she turned in, I graded it with that in mind. Should it have influenced my ability to grade her objectively based on the quality of work before me? Of course not, but it did. I took her mental state into consideration when assigning her a final grade.

I suspect the EMA will do the same with the data that wasn't pre-specified. It won't be used for that automatic "A" but it will be in the back of everyone's mind as they evaluate what was pre-specified.
