424 has just gone 3 seconds faster at the Nürburgring thanks to this new cell!

On our journey to keep finding the best technology for our world record attempt, I’m continually amazed by the progress battery cell manufacturers are making.

Ten years ago, I placed my bet on electric motorsport, convinced that the technology had huge growth potential and would eventually surpass combustion racing. Today, that belief feels stronger than ever.

Using our fast discharge test (10C), we can confirm that the Amprius Technologies, Inc. SA88 is now the leading candidate for 424. It surpasses all previous benchmarks in both energy density and thermal performance.

On the graph, you can see the Amprius cell reaching nearly 300 Wh/kg energy density after a full six-minute discharge—while keeping temperatures below 62°C. This allows us to design a battery weighing under 275 kg, which is 30 kg lighter than before. The result: a 3-second lap time improvement at the Nürburgring.

As we approach the build phase of PERRINN 424, Amprius Technologies, Inc. is looking more and more like our cell of choice. Let’s see where this takes us!

indeed your products are impressive. Soon we will test your cells ourselves to confirm but so far so good. 424 is the premiere open source project for the top level of motorsport and I’ll keep publishing as much as I can here along the way to the Nurburgring record!
