Ever since the article featuring Jose Ramon Silva a couple years ago, there has been much discussion whether the state of Tamaulipas had the power to execute storage in the Brasil field on its own. Michael Ward would say that Tamaulipas did not have the authority and that it would happen at the federal level. Here is something confirming that, finally.

Tamaulipas seeks to reduce its dependence on US gas

This year, the Government of Tamaulipas, together with the Ministry of Energy Development, seeks to position Tamaulipas as one of the states with the greatest energy development.

This week, the Secretary of Energy Development spoke about the Campo Brasil project, which aims to help Tamaulipas and Mexico in general reduce their dependence on US gas. We'll tell you more below.

What did the Secretary of Energy Development say about Campo Brasil?

Walter Julián Ángel Jiménez, Secretary of Energy Development of Tamaulipas, pointed out that this is an issue of federal interest, which is why the state does not have the power to make decisions, but it does have the power to be promoters.

The official noted that meetings have been held with the National Energy Management System to identify methodologies, rates, and storage, making it clear that the federation is taking this seriously.

What is Campo Brasil in Tamaulipas?

Ángel Jiménez noted that Campo Brasil is one of four sites in Mexico that can store gas, or at least one of the four identified so far.

Tamaulipas' Campo Brasil is an underground hydrocarbon deposit located in northern Tamaulipas. Although no longer considered viable for exploitation, it became public knowledge last month that it is being evaluated as a gas storage site.

What is known about the Campo Brasil project in Tamaulipas?

It is said that 70% of the natural gas used by Mexico for electricity generation comes from the United States, so now it is seeking to reduce dependence.

The Secretary of Energy Development has commented that this initiative has been underway since 2016; however, until now, it had been impossible for any company to implement.

The problem with relying on gas for energy production can be highlighted in wars, such as the one between Russia and Ukraine, or when freezing temperatures in the United States decrease gas production.
