First Graphene produces graphene using a proprietary, high-yield electrochemical exfoliation process, starting with their own high-grade graphite mined in Sri Lanka. This method applies a voltage to intercalate ions into the graphite's carbon layers, causing them to expand and separate into high-quality PureGRAPH® graphene products. Their integrated supply chain and focus on scaling allow them to produce large volumes of consistent, high-purity graphene materials.

First Graphene's Process

1. Secure Raw Material:
First Graphene mines its own graphite in Sri Lanka, utilizing ore with over 98% carbon content.

2. Electrochemical Exfoliation:
The graphite is transported to their manufacturing facility, where a single-step, proprietary process called electrochemical exfoliation is used.

3. Ion Intercalation:
A voltage is applied, driving ions into the graphite's layered structure.

4. Layer Separation:
This insertion causes the layers to expand, pushing them apart and creating high-quality graphene.

5. Quality Control:
The resulting PureGRAPH® graphene is high-purity, with low levels of metal and silicon contaminants, and is scientifically tested for consistency.

Key Advantages

Integrated Supply Chain:
Owning their graphite mines gives them a stable and robust supply of high-grade raw material.

High Yield and Purity:
The electrochemical exfoliation process is a single-step, high-yield method resulting in high-purity graphene.

Scalable Production:
First Graphene has large-scale, scalable manufacturing facilities capable of producing high volumes of graphene.

High-quality raw materials

First Graphene uses the world’s highest-grade graphite ore, with a carbon content of over 98%, from its own mines in Sri Lanka. It is shipped as mined, with no post-treatment, to the company’s graphene manufacturing facility, where it is directly converted into graphene products.

Graphene Manufacturing Process

First Graphene’s own proprietary process for producing graphene from graphite is based on electrochemical exfoliation. It works on the principle of applying a voltage which drives certain ions to intercalate (become inserted) into the carbon layers. The resulting expansion pushes the layers apart.

This high-yield exfoliation process enables graphite-to-graphene conversion rates of above 95%, which gives First Graphene a significant operating cost advantage over other graphene suppliers.

Can Graphene be mass produced?

The First Graphene plant is capable of mass producing 100,000 kg of high-quality PureGRAPH® graphene products per annum. The facilities are designed for rapid and inexpensive upscaling and replication of plants in other regions is possible, at low cost. Bulk packaging is available to deal with orders in tonnes rather than kilograms.
