Tesla driver cited after slamming into Charlotte police car in wild multi-vehicle crash
Officers said a Tesla driving southbound on Johnston Road failed to maintain lane control, went over the median into oncoming traffic, and slammed into a cop car. Upon impact, the police cruiser was reportedly pushed into another vehicle.
It wasn’t immediately clear if the Tesla was using any self-driving functions. Police originally said it was “unknown” if speed was a factor for the Tesla driver.
The driver may have been cited but if you watch the video it doesnt look like the driver was in control. Failure to maintain lane control is putting it mildly. In reality the Tesla veers through the left turn lane, over the median, and into oncoming traffic which happened to be a patrol car. Speed was not a factor at first with the Tesla driving along nicely with the flow of traffic. Then suddenly it started to speed up just before veering. Im guessing self driving functions were involved...not that it matters as Tesla behave this way regardless if used or not. The source of the above quote has the best video evidence of this but the included youtube video also shows it.
According to investigators, that driver went over the median and crashed into the patrol car, nearly ripping the entire front end off. 3 people were hurt, but everybody's expected to be OK.
