Meanwhile in New York: Here's a look at who is protesting, according to a law enforcement official

From CNN's Mark Morales

Demonstrators who are protesting against ICE in New York are a mix of long-standing groups who oppose immigration enforcement along with some pro-Palestinian organizations who were part of the protests at Columbia University, mixed in with anarchists waiting in the wings, a law enforcement official tells CNN.

Some of the protesters are members of organized groups including Rise and Resist, Within Our Lifetime and the Palestinian Youth Movement, the official said.

Also mixed in are anarchist groups who usually wait for opportunities to do damage as crowds get bigger and demonstrations go later into the night, the official said.

So far, the bulk of the New York protest arrests happened in front of 26 Federal Plaza as vans were trying to leave the location.

Officials are keeping an eye on the crowds and trying to determine if criminal groups begin to operate under the cover of the protests, much like they did during the George Floyd protests in 2020, the official said.

Established groups are sharing best practices for protesting on platforms like Telegram, with the hope that the general guidance will motivate more to come out and protest, the official said.

National Guard troops have temporarily detained civilians in LA protests, commander says

From the Associated Press

National Guard troops already have temporarily detained civilians in the Los Angeles protests over immigration raids, the commander in charge said Wednesday, but they quickly turned them over to law enforcement.

Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, speaking in an interview with The Associated Press and one other media outlet, also said about 500 of the National Guard troops have been trained so far to accompany agents on immigration operations. Photos of Guard soldiers providing security for the agents have already been circulated by immigration officials.

Even though things have calmed down in Los Angeles, Sherman warned that he expects the situation will escalate.

“We are expecting a ramp up,” he said, noting that protests across the nation are being discussed now. “I’m focused right here in LA, what’s going on right here. But you know, I think we’re, we’re very concerned.”

Sherman is commander of Task Force 51, which is overseeing the more than 4,000 Guard troops and 700 Marines who have been deployed to Los Angeles to provide security during the protests.

He said those temporary detentions were in the past few days, and there haven’t been many recently as things have calmed down in the city. The troops do not participate in the actual arrests or law enforcement activities, and instead immediately let go of the person once police get them under control or put them in handcuffs.

All of the troops deployed to the protests are going through several days of training on civil unrest, and those providing security on the raids go through additional instruction, legal training and rehearsals with the agents doing the enforcement.

Raids and protests expanding to more than a dozen cities across US. Here's what to know
From CNN staff

As National Guard troops remain in Los Angeles, protests against the Trump administration’s immigration actions are emerging in other major US cities, including New York, Chicago and cities in Texas.

Meantime, local leaders in California are saying US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents are continuing raids in their cities.

Here’s where things stand:

Legal battle: The Trump administration is urging a federal judge to reject California’s bid for an emergency court order that would limit how federal officials can use Marines and members of the state’s National Guard. The judge set a hearing for tomorrow afternoon.

Latest on Marines: The 700 Marines mobilized to the Los Angeles area are still undergoing training as of this morning, and it is not yet clear when they will be deployed to help with protests, according to a US Northern Command spokesperson.

Curfew: Mayor Karen Bass said a curfew in parts of downtown Los Angeles could remain in effect tonight. The curfew is in place for pockets of downtown LA where demonstrations in the city have been concentrated. It applies from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pacific Time.

Arrests across the country: The Los Angeles Police Department said more than 200 people were arrested Tuesday into Wednesday. 203 of those were were failure to disperse and more than a dozen were for curfew violations, according to LAPD. In Chicago, police arrested 17 people and four were charged with felonies, the department said. In Atlanta, police arrested six people involved in demonstrations.

Federal criminal charges: Two men in Los Angeles have been arrested on federal charges after allegedly throwing Molotov cocktails at police officers in Paramount and downtown Los Angeles over the weekend, US Attorney Bill Essayli said. He added authorities are also looking at “hundreds of people” who may have committed acts of violence during protests.

Protests in New York: New York City Mayor Eric Adams said he told the state’s governor that the city does not need assistance from the National Guard. NYPD officers made 86 arrests while about 2,500 protesters were on the streets Tuesday night, mainly in lower Manhattan, New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch said.

Calls for peace: Members of the Texas National Guard are deploying to various locations in the state ahead of planned protests throughout the week and into the weekend, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said. Houston Mayor John Whitmire called for “peaceful demonstrations” this weekend. Leaders in San Antonio have also pledged their support “to maintain peace and order.”

What the Trump administration is saying: Attorney General Pam Bondi said the administration “is not scared to go further” in expanding its legal authorities to deploy troops in Los Angeles. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth suggested to lawmakers today that Trump’s move to federalize the National Guard could be replicated in other states.

Other cities: Other protests have also taken place in Santa Ana, Las Vegas, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Seattle, Boston and Washington, DC.

Here’s a look at where there have been protests:
