Market maker signals are believed by some traders to be small trades used by market makers to communicate their intentions to each other. These signals often involve tiny share amounts, sometimes as little as $5 or $10, which many traders think are too small for regular investors to bother with due to commission costs.
Here are a few common market maker signals and their supposed meanings:
100 – I need shares.
200 – I need shares badly but don’t take the stock down.
300 – Take (or I am taking) the stock down at least 30% so I can load shares.
500 – Gap the stock (up or down).
911 – Pending news or press release on the way.
Some traders use these signals as part of their strategy, but there is debate over whether they are truly meaningful or just trading folklore.
