Yes, just about all of the stock article outfits are likely getting something in return for promoting certain companies -- outfits like Motley Fool, Seeking Alpha, Insider Monkey, GuruFocus, Zacks, etc. With just about any article, there is likely an angle somewhere. As you said, using the chart provides a more objective view, supplemented by the company's numbers, and then whatever info these articles provide.
Problem is, fully analyzing a company's prospects would take a major amount of time / effort, and do any of us investors really have the ability to do it well? Buffett said he reads 500 pages / day, and that's the level we would need for our own analysis, but almost nobody has the ability to do it. That's where using a broad index like the S+P 500 makes sense for the bulk of one's stock allocation. Short term trading using charts / TA would be an exception, since you aren't getting 'married' to the stock for the LT.
