The continued advances in compute devices are no doubt amazing, but they’re not enough. The exponential growth in compute demand and the energy to power it are unsustainable without advances in the underlying device structures .
At current growth rates AI compute energy in 2050 will require every photon coming from the sun to earth. 100 years from 2050 we would need to capture every photon the sun emits, period.
We need breakthroughs. Progress as usual in devices is not good enough anymore. Of all the “AI exponentials” energy will be the limiter. We cannot defeat an exponential foe with linear swords and sticks!”
Tonight Sam Altman on Twitter complains that Chat GPT can’t keep up with demand for data ‘ , having to suspend services temporarily.
