Before DEI the US had the EEOC which still exists today.

They would come in and audit your employment roles to insure who were in compliance with their hiring guidelines.

If you were a white male over 50 you'd be the first out the door when a layoff came. If you were a black woman over 40 and handicapped you had a job for life. Next in line were white women over 45 because they became more expensive for the company.

Now that may sound discriminatory but it is still happening today when a company announces they are reducing their corporate work force by 10% who do you think they are laying off?

And to make it perfectly legal from an employment status the reason the person was let go was because their job was eliminated.

Now who do you think Musk and his motley crew are targeting when it comes to firing people. And the reason why? Job elimination.
