Exploring the mechanical strength, antimicrobial performance, and bioactivity of 3D-printed silicon nitride-PEEK composites in cervical spinal cages

The 3D-printed PEEK and Si3N4-PEEK cages exhibited adequate mechanical strength for all designs, exceeding 14.7 kN in compression and 6.9 kN in compression shear. Si3N4-PEEK exhibited significantly lower bacterial adhesion levels, with a 93.9% reduction (1.21 log), and enhanced cell proliferation when compared to PEEK. Si3N4-PEEK would allow for custom fabrication of 3D-printed spinal implants that reduce the risk of infection compared to unfilled PEEK or metallic alloys.

Sintx 2 year NIH grant covering Si3N4=PEEK cages comes to an end this year and opens the pathway for 510K filing. Im curious how far into this they are with the above published study.

SINTX Technologies Awarded Phase II NIH Grant for Silicon Nitride-PEEK 3D Printed Composite Spinal Implants

“In Phase II, SINTX and external collaborators will conduct formal design validation activities; test static and dynamic mechanical properties of implants 3DP according to the revised design; carry out formal biocompatibility assessments; and assess in vivo antimicrobial activity, biocompatibility, and osseointegration for a 3DP SN-PEEK cervical implant against appropriate controls.”

SINTX will collaborate with the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine (Penn Vet) over the next 24 months to execute this project. The NIH grant will support resourcing and acquisition of materials as well as testing and trials at SINTX and Penn Vet. Upon the successful execution of the Phase II grant application goals, SINTX will have the majority of the benchtop and large animal in vivo data needed to seek FDA regulatory clearance using the 510(k) pathway. Additionally, successful demonstration of infection prevention in vivo will be a critical step towards enabling an antimicrobial device claim. These preliminary animal data will be used to seek future funding from NIH or other Federal agencies to further validate antimicrobial properties of devices made from SN-PEEK.

We already know Sintx and Morgan were working together. If there is going to be some sort of NP/Sintx merger, that just solidifies it. We also know Zimmer Biomet and Sintx have had a long standing relationship (going on 20 years) so as long as Sintx components for Arthroplasty are any good, Zimmer Biomet will come out from behind the curtain. With ZB comes ZimVie and I believe Solventum because of Bryan Hanson. Leaving only Cardinal Health which is suggested by Sintx hiring of Joseph Palomo who joined Sintx from Cardinal Health R&D division.

Morgan Ceramics = Aerospace products
Zimmer Biomet = Arthroplasty oriented products
ZimVie = Dental?
Solventum = Wound Care, Catheters, & possibly Cancer treatment products.
Ned Medical = Microspheres for cancer treatment
Cardinal Health = PPE & Medical protection apparel.
NP Aerospace = Armor plates & other possible products connected to TA&T.
