I have to be honest I don't love the two initial signings by the gm this offseason, but don't strongly dislike them either, wouldn't of been my choices, but I can see the path to them working out if you have reasonable expectations. Holmes was fine as reliever as long as he wasn't closing which he won't be with diaz here. Holmes has been used numerous times this year to get more than 3 outs, and to be fair, holmes doesn't max effort it like hicks does trying to throw the ball through the nearest wall. We also had seth lugo who made a easy transition from reliever to starter. I think it depends on the pitcher, if the guy is the type of a guy who wants to throw 102 mph and has always had problems with control and now your asking him to throw more innings that might be a problem. Holmes has been used by the yankees for multiple innings before, now his control isn't anywhere near as good as lugo's, but not at hicks levels either. Now can he go 5-6 that remains to be seen. End result is he is not the type of pitcher like Hicks that throws the ball though the wall, and more like a lugo type, although I don't nearly expect the same results as he is not as good lugo has better control.
I will like this signing better if they are planning on using him as a 6th starter, because they don't want Senga to pitch every 5 days, and they sign 2 more sure fired starters, and when there are days off we use him in the bullpen, actually I think that would be a plus, because that would cut down on his innings.
To be honest Not sure on this one. If he is penciled in as one of 5 guys and we megill as the 6th option I like that a lot less. If we are using a 6 man for senga, and holmes starts when there are no day off a time through the rotation and than is used in relief as multi inning guy when a starter doesn't have it that day and there are days off, I will like that alot more. Can't say anybody knows how he is gonna do, he is a solid reliever if he doesn't close at the very least, and maybe he turns out to be a better starter. Time will tell. Either way how I feel about the signing is based on whether 1 or two sp are coming, he is perfect if he swing back and forth as he starts when we need a 6 SP, with no days off, and use him in the bullpen when there is a day off that time through the rotation. At least that would my thinking with him.
He did start in the minors. He did make starts in triple A indianapolis in 2017, where he pitched to a 3.36 era, so he has started before. Granted triple A indianapolis in 2017 is not exactly the majors. But he at least started at one point in his career. All is just my opinion, and I could always be wrong though.
